Irregular Periods

Amenorrhoea is a term used to define the absence of menstruation during the usual menstrual years for more than six months. It is considered to be a symptom of another condition. It is classified into two sub categories primary amenorrhoea and secondary amenorrhoea. Primary amenorrhoea is when a female has not menstruated by the age of sixteen often caused by an eating disorder. Secondary amenorrhoea is the cessation of menstruation for a period longer than six months in an adult woman. Pregnancy, lactation and PCOS appear to be the main reasons that a woman may experience secondary amenorrhoea.

What is oligomenorrhoea?

Oligomenorrhoea is a similar menstrual irregularity to amenorrhoea. It is a term used to describe menstruation that has diminished in amount and frequency of menstruation; PCO/S or elevated prolactin levels often cause it. Research suggests suggest that although oligomenorrhoea is often caused by a disorder, it can also occur in young women beginning their menstrual cycles and also in women nearing menopause.

What may cause menstrual irregularities?

Women with Polycystic ovarian syndrome PCO/S often experience menstrual irregularity. Other causes may be emotional or physical stress, chronic illness, intense exercise often in athletes, poor nutrition, chronic illness and menopause.
