Iodine is an essential mineral required by the body. The thyroid gland is dependent on iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones, thus a major indication of iodine deficiency include hypothyroid symptoms. Iodine is also required for maintaining healthy breast tissue, and cancer prevention. The mineral has potent antioxidant properties, as well as immune regulating and oestrogen modulating functions.
